Session 5
Canter & Canter - Assertive Discipline

In this demonstration, taken from the powerpoint and lecture presentation on Canter's Assertive Discipline the steps to effectively implementing the approach are explained.

Read a response from Lee Canter to the comment that the Assertive Discipline model is just about marbles in a jar.

Essential for the success of the Assertive Discipline approach is the ability to catch students doing the right thing and the provision of positive rewards for appropriate classroom behaviour. This is easier said then done. As a group brainstorm of list of simple, affordable, desireable and available rewards or positive consequences that can be offered for positive behaviour.
Some ideas
Brainstorm as a group some positive individual and class rewards that would be appropriate for primary and/or secondary students. Make sure they are affordable, readily available, healthy and desireable. Some simple suggestions include letters home, raffle tickets for weekly prize, lucky-dips, free-time (sports/DVD) . . . . .
